Description
Pack of 6 spare starters for rocket engine
The Estes Starter is the basic igniter used to start the combustion process in the rocket motor. It is the starter that comes with all Estes model rocket engines. This set of 6 starters are used as spares in case one of the ones that comes with the package of motors does not work. These igniters only work in ESTES rocket motors.
Advantages of the Estes Starter:
The nice thing about these starters is that they do not contain any flammible pyrogen, so they are completely inert and can be shipped through the mail (they can go by airplane)!
Second, they are cheap and pretty effective in black powder motors, which are the most common type of engines used in model rocketry. The engines are easily identified by their paper case.
The Estes starter is made from two thick lead wires, and a smaller Nichrome bridge wire that is welded to the thick lead wires. The clear goop on the tip of the starter is just there to prevent the two thick lead wires from touching. It is NON-Flammible.
The way they work is that when electricity from the launch controller is passed through the nichrome wire, it heats up and glows red-hot. Nichrome is the same metal wire used in your household toaster oven. The heat from this thin hot bridge wire is transferred to the propellant and it catches fire. This is what launches the rocket into the sky.It is critical that the bridge wire be in direct contact with the propellant inside the rocket motor so the heat generated by the starter is quicky transferred to the propellant so it can burst into flame. If it does not touch the propellant, there is a good chance that the motor will not launch.
